EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2026: Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing
Written byNeta Kela, PhDFounder & Managing PartnerShort answer: The EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2026 call closes on 28 October 2026 at 17:00 Brussels time. One of its three topics, Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing, carries roughly EUR 32 million of the EUR 96 million total budget, with grants of up to EUR 4 million per project, fully funded. It supports early-stage (TRL 1 to 4) proof-of-concept work on ageing interventions, biomarker tools or new approach methodologies (NAMs), not basic ageing-mechanism research or clinical trials. With under three weeks left, biotech teams and university spinouts working on longevity science need to move now on consortium formation and the proposal.
What is the EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2026 deadline for biotech?
The call (HORIZON-EIC-2026-PATHFINDERCHALLENGES-01) opened on 22 July 2026 and closes on 28 October 2026 at 17:00 Brussels time, a single cut-off for all three 2026 Challenges: Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing, Advanced Materials for Miniaturised Energy Harvesting Systems, and DeepRAP (trustworthy cognitive AI). Each Challenge carries roughly EUR 32 million of the EUR 96 million total, funded as Research and Innovation Action grants at 100% of eligible costs. The EIC considers EUR 4 million per project appropriate, though larger budgets can be requested if justified.
This is a different EIC instrument than the EIC Accelerator, covered in our EIC Accelerator 2026 cut-off and IHI Call 13 update: Pathfinder Challenges funds early science (TRL 1 to 4) with no equity component, while the Accelerator funds later-stage companies with blended grant and equity.
Who should apply: three routes for ageing biotechnology
The Biotechnology for Healthy Ageing topic is scoped narrowly. It does not fund biomarker discovery, precision nutrition, new ageing clocks, or wellness apps. It funds proof-of-concept work along one of three routes:
- Preventative or therapeutic interventions (biotechnology-based or pharmaceutical) targeting a hallmark of ageing, with a completed TRL 3 proof of concept tested in a genuinely aged vertebrate model.
- Biomarker-based tools that combine multiple ageing signals into one actionable signature, validated on longevity cohorts, to responsibly guide deployment of ageing interventions.
- New Approach Methodologies (NAMs), such as organ-on-chip, microphysiological systems, or in silico models, that capture aged status across more than one tissue and go beyond the current state of the art.
The EIC expects to fund up to 10 projects across the topic: around 5 interventions, 3 biomarker tools, and 2 NAMs. Sex and gender differences must be addressed in the proposal, and reproductive ageing is explicitly in scope.
| Requirement | Detail |
|---|---|
| Deadline | 28 October 2026, 17:00 Brussels time |
| Topic budget | About EUR 32M of EUR 96M total across 3 Challenges |
| Grant size | Up to EUR 4M per project, 100% funded |
| TRL range | 1 to 4 (completed TRL 3 proof of concept required at entry) |
| Consortium | Single entity, or 2 partners from 2 different Member States/Associated Countries, or 3+ partners with at least 1 EU Member State entity plus 2 more from different countries |
| Page limit | 30 pages |
| Evaluation thresholds | Excellence 4/5, Impact 3.5/5, Implementation 3/5 (weighted 50/30/20%) |
How does this fit an EU non-dilutive funding strategy?
For a university spinout or early biotech working on ageing biology, Pathfinder Challenges is non-dilutive research funding that de-risks the science before a company is investment-ready for Series A or an EIC Accelerator grant-equity package. PXM's Fund practice builds and leads these applications end to end: partner search, work plan design against the three evaluation criteria, and submission through the EU Funding & Tenders Portal. For the wider 2026 and 2027 calendar across EIC, Horizon Europe and IHI, see the PXM EU Funding Calendar and our Horizon Europe Health 2027 calls guide.
A gap to flag for teams building a longer funding roadmap: Pathfinder Challenges funds TRL 1 to 4 research only. Teams already past proof of concept and needing grant-plus-equity blended finance to reach the clinic should look instead at the EIC Accelerator (next cut-off 4 November 2026) or, for clinical-stage innovation partnerships, IHI calls.
What should I prepare before 28 October?
- Confirm your science fits one of the three in-scope routes (intervention, biomarker tool, or NAM), not basic mechanism research
- Line up a consortium that meets the minimum entity and country rule, or confirm single-entity eligibility
- Have a completed TRL 3 proof of concept, tested in a genuinely aged model, ready to document
- Draft the excellence, impact and implementation sections against the 4/5, 3.5/5, 3/5 thresholds, not just a general narrative
- Address sex and gender dimensions explicitly in the proposal
- Confirm the 30-page limit and submission mechanics on the EU Funding & Tenders Portal well before 28 October
- Map a follow-on funding path (EIC Accelerator, IHI, or private capital) for after the TRL 1-4 research phase
